It is thought that something like 7 out of 10 marriage or relationship breakdowns can be attributed to the menopause.
Divorce in the older age group, is increasing, with many frequently citing Menopause as one of the reasons. Some women have stated that their symptoms affected their marriage/relationship.
Menopause on average affects most women in their early 50’s, however, perimenopause which is when hormone levels begin to fluctuate causing symptoms to appear, can start as early as mid-40’s. It can also affect younger women.
Typical symptoms include hot flushes and brain fog, but also forgetfulness and confusion, confidence loss, mood fluctuation, and odd physical symptoms such as aching limbs, tiredness, sleep loss, and a myriad of other symptoms. These issues can be particularly challenging, especially for couples, with both partners feeling confused about what is happening. It can magnify or highlight existing difficulties in a relationship. And a lack of understanding of what their partner is going through, can lead to arguments or growing apart or falling out of love and the loss of physical intimacy.
Help is out there. Menopause isn’t a dirty word or a disease that should be hidden but is a stage of life that every woman will experience, so don’t be afraid to talk about it with your partner and get the help and advice you need.
